This section of Crossroads in Mathematics, a guideline for improving introductory postsecondary mathematics courses, outlines the standards for the intellectual development of students in such courses. Like courses from other disciplines, “”an introductory college mathematics program should help students see mathematics as an enriching and empowering discipline.”” The section outlines and describes seven facets of intellectual development in mathematics: problem solving, modeling, reasoning, connecting with other disciplines, communicating, using technology, and developing mathematical power. The document will help educators and administrators alike enhance introductory mathematics courses.
